History of AIRO

AIRO (Associazione Italiana di Ricerca Operativa) was founded on April 20, 1961 by a group of scientists, practicioners and managers representing important Italian publica and private industries, universities, research centers, ministries and ISTAT (the Italian Statistical Institute). The constitution act is available here.

Since September 2015 AIRO has taken the representation of the academic disciplinary sector MATH-06/A Ricerca Operativa, that was previously represented by CIRO (Centro Inthruniversitario per la Ricerca Operativa).

Several national societies, including AIRO, participate to EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) founded in  1975.

AIRO is also member of IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies) and develops common initiatives with other Italian scientific societies (AICA, AICE, AILOG, AISRE, AMASES, ANIPLA, SIMAI, UMI). Today AIRO has about 300 individual members and some collective organizations: companies, research centers and university departments.

The official journal of AIRO is 4OR, published in collaboration with the Belgian and French OR societies.
